BRIEF HISTORY OF IKEJA DISTRICT SOCIETY OF ICAN
The Ikeja District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria was launched on Thursday 12th of August, 1982. the launch, which took place at the main hall of the Lagos Country Club, Airport Road (now Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way). Ikeja, Lagos through the support of the then President of Lagos Country Club, Mr. Bayo Delano and the Secretary, Chief S. A Jimoh.
Mr. P. G. Dudeney O. B. E, chaired the occasion and the Guest Speaker was Dr. A. K. Ubeku, then Managing Director (Designate) Guinness Nigeria Plc and Pro – Chancellor, Bendel State University, Chief Olusola Faleye, then President of ICAN was the Chief Launcher.
Indeed, the District was born great and will remain great. Since then, the District has paraded men and women of substance as Chairmen.
The first Annual Dinner and Dance was held at the Lagos Airport Hotel on Thursday 2nd February, 1984. it was chaired by Prince Bola Ajibola, the then President of Nigerian Bar Association, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Judge of International Court at the Hague. The Guest Speaker was Chief Alani Oluwole Adeosun, Past President of ICAN, and former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The District held the first Workshop for businessmen with the theme, “How to Raise Finance for Small and Medium Scale Businesses from Banks and the Capital Market.” The Speakers were Chief S. I. Adegbite, then Managing Director of Wema Bank Plc and Chief B. O Fagbemi, the Chairman / Managing Director of Prudential Securities Limited and Prudential Finance Limited. The Workshop was a success and many more were organized afterwards, including two Business Luncheon titled “21st Century Challenges to a Successful Entrepreneurship,” and “The Challenges of Transparency Initiatives in the Eradication of Corruption in Nigeria.”
The first female member was Mrs. A. A. Balogun, FCA who later became the First Lady President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.
The District has won several awards in the last twenty years of its existence. Some of which are:
- ICAN 4oth Anniversary District Society Award for the upliftment of Accountancy Profession in Nigeria in 2005
- Most Outstanding District for 2005
- 2nd Position at the 35th Annual Accountants Conference Variety Show in 2005
- Best Performance Award during the Inter-District Parade at the 36th Annual Accountants Conference held in Abuja in 2006
